[Help] New Graphics card!

Today I bought a Geforce 9600GT (upgraded from my 7900GT), I was told that for my system it would just be a case of a straight swap and driver update.

Ive got the graphics card in and working, but I'm not noticing an FPS increase (from the upgrade surely it would be quite significant?) and I now have no sound on my PC :|

On top of that, I can't start cod4 anymore, all other games load and work fine, but cod4 will open to the splash screen then I get a message saying that it has encountered an error.

I have the latest drivers for the card, so now I'm kinda stumped as to whats wrong :S

I found this which may help you with the sound issues:

1.Click Start

, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Hardware and Sound.
3. Under Sound, click Manage audio devices.
4. Click the playback device from which you want to output sound.
5. Click Set Default, and then click OK.



Another thing to check would be your Device Manager to see what is listed under "sound, video and game controllers". Please follow the steps bellow to to get to Device Manager.

In the search window type "devmgmt.msc"

You should now see the Device Manager Window

Please expand (click on the "+" sign) "sound, video and game controllers"

Please answer following questions.

Question 1: Is your onboard audio device listed?

Question 2: If your onboard audio device is not listed then what is listed?

Question 3: If your onboard audio device is listed is there something else that is listed?


Please make sure that you have the proper resources to re-install the drivers if needed.

If your onboard audio device is not listed you can try to uninstall or disable the HDMI Driver (if present) by right clicking and selecting "uninstall" or "disable". This might help to make your onboard audio device default again.

your eyes cant see past 30-50 fps ?
all it means is when shitloads happens on screen your lowest fps count will be higher
eg 7900 gt hits a mark in a game were the fps drops to say 15 fps ,game start to act choppy
the 9600 plays the same part of the game but only has 35 fps as its lowest ie the game still runs smooth
now with aa af enable the 9600 could go to the same 15 fps but on the 7900 it becomes a slide show .understand my teapot friend
thats why ur best looking at comparison sites that use the lowest fps count as to how it will handle a game
and better still has average and high as some game can show to be over a 100 fps yet when crap happens onscreen and fancie,s are added it crawls like tar..

if ur still using your old configs then u,ll only see fps boost by running the in game command on screen
this is when you can now turn the extra on and see that it now runs the same as your old card but with more details etc

dont forget if ur benchmarking the cpu will play a part in the outcome of the score.and we dont play benchmarks so they dont relay show what its like in a game

If you're using onboard HD sound using builtin windows drivers & your gfx card has onboard HDMI sound that uses windows drivers you tend to get a conflict, getting the proper drivers for your onboard sound may help, uninstalling the HDMI sound may also work.
7900GT WAS a top end card, 9600GT IS a midrange card, wouldn't expect much performance gain bt would expect better quality. What memory has each got?

Now that was the kind of answer I was after

I've tried updating my CPU's audio drivers but it did nothing. How would I go about uninstalling the HDMI drivers?
I've read about loads of people having the same problem and the only way they have managed to fix it was to buy a sound card, which I would really love to avoid :S
I think both cards have 512mb memory.
Don't really understand why it wouldnt be much of an upgrade, I'm a simple person but looking at how many gforce cards fall between the 7900 and 9600 common sense would see that it would be a pretty big upgrade, but I havnt noticed any FPS increase at all which i kind of why I bought it :S

ok unreal which would you buy a 7600gt dx9 or a 8400gt dx10 free sticker both are say £30.00

goto control panel
click sound and audio devices
go to audio tab
select te audio u use in default drop down
do same for voice too

me n grumps had this prob when we got hdmi on our radeon cards and it took control from the onboard realtec audio since neither of us used hdmi conection just plan old vga/no speakers it didnt work

remember unreal were not only here to ridicule you but also give advice on such purchase,s
did u get the ddr 3 version

I tried that already and in the audio menu it just says "No audio devices" so all the menu's are greyed out.
No its DDR2

Fixed my sound problem, found a cheapy sound card that i bought from novatech.
Now just need to work on getting cod4 to work
