Ok welshie, remove all add-in cards, ram and power/drive cables
then take a pic of MB and post it here or look for some big white writing on it that looks like it may be a model no.
if you're able to get ts with another machine contact me via xfire.
I recall shaggy & me having to talk you through it last time

right, welshies MB is a gigglebit GA-8S648FX-M2 which doesn't appear on gigabytes website.
bios has been reset, ram and agp card reseated.
It still responds to pwr button but doesnt post, (no video post either) pwr & hdd leds stay on permantly. NO BEEPS (I'm assuming it has a piezo speaker the same as the FX-M)
Haven't tried it with minimum plugged in as run out of time.
I'm leaning towards gfx card, as I've had one with similar symptoms.
Anybody else have any other suggestions?

If power and HDD leds are on then it's not even getting to self test before bios boot, normally a power problem, or as you say, a hang in the graphics post tests.
As it started when new ram was fitted (it was ddr that was fitted wasn't it?) it may be that a connector got half pulled or that a screw or the like fell down the back of the M/B and is shorting. Most likely to be graphics though. As a last resort try taking EVERYTHING off the board EXCEPT the cpu and fan then replacing making sure it's all securely seated. And if you can get a spare graphics card to try then do that too. PS when dismantling don't forget to take a quick look down the back of the motherboard for paperclips etc. (I have known systems where ALL standoffs were fitted even when the motherboard didn't have the corresponding holes so every now and again there would be a short to the extra standoff)

maybe a silly question m8 but did you put the RAM back into the same slot. Some motherboards are particular as to which slot you put the RAM in.

Take out your graphics card and clean the contacts (the shiny bits that go into your motherboard)

The battery is beside where you plug your hard drives in. (white and blue connectors) also behind graphics cards. Usually the battery is held in by a metal clip that you push back and it pops out. leave batt out for 10 mins with the power switched off.

GL :good:
where is everyone?
