You have 32 bit and 64 bit Operating Systems (OS's).

The main difference is down to their use of system memory. 32 bit OS's are limited to the amount of system memory they can use, around 3 - 3.5GB if I recall correctly. 64 bit OS's can make use of more.

Aside from that you have software optimised for 64 bit, which theoretically will perform better than 32 bit versions - though in most 'normal' cases you wont really notice much of a difference.

If you're going for a 64 bit OS, then you may as well skip XP and Vista and got for Windows 7. Windows 7 comes with both a 32bit and 64bit OS on the same DVD (you choose which version you want during installation). You will need a 64 bit CPU for use a 64 bit OS (all modern CPUs are 64 bit so you should be OK on that front).

Windows 7 comes with DirectX 11, the latest version! So you would also be 'future proofing' your system opting for this OS even if your graphics card doesnt support DX11 (you can always upgrade in the future).

At the moment, you can get Windows 7 for around £50 if you pre-order. From what Ive read its a big improvement over Vista.
