AMD moves to 12-core server processors

Advanced Micro Devices plans to release processors with 12 cores, which changes its product road map and kills earlier plans to release 8-core chips. The 12-core processor, code-named Magny-Cours, will be targeted at servers and is due for release in the first half of 2010, according to the company’s updated road map announced Wednesday. The chip will include 12M bytes of L3 cache and support DDR3 RAM, according to the road map. AMD is jumping from a 6-core chip code-named Istanbul, due for release in the second half of 2009, straight to a 12-core chip the following year, an AMD spokesman said. Until last month, AMD officials repeated plans to ship the 8-core server chip, code-named Barcelona, in 2009.
Montreal has now been replaced by Istanbul, followed by a 12-core product in 2010, the spokesman said. AMD is also planning to release a 6-core chip code-named Sao Paulo in 2010. The chip will include 6M bytes of L3 cache and support for DDR3 RAM. Sao Paulo chips could meet the need of systems that don’t require 12 cores, Allen said. The new chips will be more power efficient as they will be manufactured using the 45-nanometer process, an upgrade from the 65-nm process currently used to manufacture Barcelona. Even with AMD’s altered road map, Intel will remain formidable. Intel shipped 78.5 percent of chips in the first quarter of 2008, while AMD held a 20.6 percent market share, a slight gain from the 18.7 percent market share it held in the first quarter of 2007.

Not sure about that one - AMD never had plans to bring out an 8 core server chip code named "Barcelona" since they already have a chip called that (unless it's a typo); and the 45nm, 6M L3, ddr3 chips (quad core) are due out later this year. By 2010 Intel at least, and probably AMD too, should be at 32nm or better. Are you sure that wasn't a 1/4/08 release?

which they wont becos mac are a bunch of thieves..they stole the idea of the first GUI and expanded on their own GUI..wudnt suprise me if they still do it! :P

mac is 8 core now has been for 6 months i think...with up to 4 terrabytes HD and 32gig ram and mac was very nice to incorporate a dual boot system that enables u to boot windows on a mac....i wont even go into the grafiks cards

how much ram does vista let u have now....xp used to be 2gigs...but u could hack it up to 4??
my 2yr old quad lets me have and see 16 gigs of ram....omg the power

Macintosh, or for newer models, Mac, is a brand name which covers several lines of personal computers designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. The original Macintosh was released on January 24, 1984; it was the first commercially successful personal computer to feature a mouse and a graphical user interface (GUI) rather than a command line interface.

Previous models used the AIM alliance's PowerPC and early models used Motorola's 68k. Apple also develops the operating system for Macs, currently Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard". This is in contrast to most IBM compatible PCs, where multiple vendors create hardware intended to run another company's software. The modern Mac, like other personal computers, is capable of running alternative operating systems such as Linux, FreeBSD, and Microsoft Windows, the latter of which is considered to be the Mac's biggest competitor.

i cant remember where i found out about mac taking windows idea for GUI. i shall do some digging in my old ICT research files from college :O .. could of been a rumour, but i shall just go along with them taking gates' idea as im not a big fan of Apple computers

the apple 8 core is 2 quad cores, dual cpu boards have been around for ages
no 32bit OS can use more than 4gb, but you can increase that amount using bank swapping (like the 8bits did 25yrs ago)
If you can afford it there are boards for PC's that take 2 CPU's 32gb's of RAM and you can OC like hell (which you can't on a mac) 2 quads can run at just over 5ghz and it there's support for quad crossfire/SLi gfx cards as well.

If you did, it would give the impression that Microsoft stole the GUI idea from Mac, and Xerox invented the 'mouse' as we know it.

xerox are attributed with creating the WIMP enviroment (window,icon,menu,pointer) but apple with the first desktop using it (although DRI's CP/M GEM also came at about the same time, with a IBM PC version following a year later along with the atari ST port, aah my first foray into C, god what horrible memory, also had a copy on my amstrad cpc6128)
