FAO: Games - Radeon 4870 vs GeForce 9800 GX2

Hi mate,
Here's the review I was talking about last night on TS:
http://www.bilgiustam.com/512mb-ati-hd- ... -testleri/
Pass it on to your mate @ the computer shop (not sure if he's registered here).
The review could be fake, they are comparing nvidia's dual gpu against a single gpu ATI 4870, the graphs show the 4870 kicks some arse, and there will be a dual core ATI card available (4870X2) ...so you could only imagine how awesome that would be if the review is legit!

that review is now a bit outdated as there are some more reliable 3dmark Vantage results floating about now ( the 4870 doesn't exist with 512 ram so those old results are a bit dodgy) see
http://www.nordichardware.com/news,7809.html
The 4870 and 4850 results are based on test drivers and are probably low as there are reliable reports of the 4870x2 scoring > 5200 which is significantly higher than the GT280 and more than 2x 4870!!
PS 4850 release has been put back to June 23 to match the 4870 (mostly paper) release

here you go another release article
http://www.hardspell.com/english/doc/sh ... ws_id=3413
even on a standard amd x2 4400 this thing looks good
(sarcasticly say )if it is true
also compared to the other article icey poo,s put up (can also be seen on Guru3d.com) the newer cards seem to be lightening the load on cpu use dramaticly
quick all back to single core for gaming lol

Still probably dodgy as it's got 512Mb of ddr 3 which would make it a 4850, although it could be a test board whilst waiting for a supply of ddr5 since the core clocks are 4870.
In other words that would be what you can get with an overclocked 4850 and the proper 4870 should do 10 - 20% better than that (if it's not a fake

)
Pixel fillrates on the GPUZ screen are quite a bit worse than my 3870 too

Details of the 4850/4870 have finally been confirmed. They have 800 shaders so any benchmarks showing 480 are fake. Performance is supposed to be good enough to have Nvidia doing a last minute price drop on its 260 and 280 cards to try to compete

( 280GTX is still likely (but not definitely) to be the fastest card until the 4870 and 4850 X2's (yes 4850X2 apparently) come out in the Autumn in time for FC2)
ATI are working with Havoc to provide Physics support on these cards, and the X2 versions have improved communications between the 2 gpu's to get rid of micro stuttering and improve scaling.
I believe that the 4850 is supposed to be 20% faster than an 8800gt with the 4870 being 32% faster (in 3dmark06)
EDIT OOPS make that 40% faster for the 4850 (in games) with the 4870 being 40% faster than the 9800gtx !

Risking a treble post here to say that AMD moved forward the official release day of the HD4850 to .... Yesterday.
But there don't appear to be any on sale in the UK ( just everywhere else in the world

)
4870 is expected in 2-3 weeks and to be 10-20% faster than the 4850

Grumps, to go a little OT, have you seen any meaningful reviews of these compared to the NVIDA 280 GTXs?
Only 280 shootout I could find was for AMDs old kit
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2 ... 089,00.asp
Lots of speculation that NVIDIA wins on performance but AMD gives by far the best bang for buck (especially if Xfired), but I cant find any supporting benchmarks...

You could try here for 4850 vs gtx280 and 9800gtx+
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/731/10/
There are a couple of x-fire reviews about (
http://guru3d.com/article/amd-ati-radeo ... ercolor/17 ) but the main thing is that crossfired 4850's will cost £200, GTX280 £400 and the 4850's win by 20-30% on games that support crossfire (Cod4) although they lose out by 10-20% on games that don't(Et-qw)
No verifiable 4870 reviews as yet - Just rumours, but price is confirmed at $299 (£150 + UK mark up) so 2 will still come in at under the GTX280 and wipe the floor in a lot of app's
(And if you have a decent 790FX board (Like ME

) you can fit 4 4850's in and still have a few pence change from the 280 price)
They also apparently x-fire with the 3800 series cards
( Spot the AMD fanOldGit [ Definitely NOT a fanBOY])

Cheapest price for saphire version (inc delivery)
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145524
Though this version is very tempting
http://www.advancetec.co.uk/acatalog/As ... l_Box.html
But not as nice as a good old 4-6-4 locomotive or even an 0-4-0 tank engine
