As per title, is a gaming mouse really that much better than a standard mouse? ...enough to justify the cost?

Any recommended ones?

It is actually a genuine question Plow :)

Just thought I'd add the images before Porky jumped in to spam the thread.

Aaaah I see Icey - very very clever although I must answer the question: what role shall Porky then play on the forums?. We must embrace him as we embrace all kind species of the human race.

And BTW I am very content with my Razor Imperator™ albeit 99% of the marketing is BS. For what it's worth I believe that the 'Cyborg R.A.T 7' is one of the all time best reviewed mices.

The problem I have with most fancy pants type of mouse, is that they are mostly right-handed. I am left handed, so need a suitable shaped mouse where I can reach all the buttons.

The RAT7 mouse looks like Batmans car/bike in the latest film!

Razor now do a left handed mouse especially for those unable to use their right hand properly :p
I can find no noticably difference between my Razor Diamondback & my £7 Logitech RX250
except the RX250 hasn't got stupid extra buttons that decide you need to reload in the middle
of a knife fight because you gripped the mouse to tight. That and my RX250 hasn't got a broken
mousewheel through being smashed into the desk to many times :lol: It all boils down to how many
buttons you want/need/use, whether you're going to use it just for gaming or for general/work use
as well or if you don't mind spending £30-£50 on something you might break. BUT do buy a half decent
gaming surface like a £15 Steelseries (hard plastic) or similar

Found an ambidextrous mouse that looks ok on the Razor website:

:: Razer Abyssus

Any thoughts?

I only need 3 buttons (a left, a clickable scroll wheel, and a right), I dont need a mouse that looks like a cross between a phone with 38 keys on it and a device batman would love to have on his utility belt!

How much does resolution come into play?

@Sky:
I already have an ALLSOP mouse mat (metal type with pattern), low profile, good size, very nice. Im currently using a Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 1000.

I don't think you'll find the Abyssus much improvement (except psychologically)
I mean 3500dpi? try moving your hand 1/3500th of an inch to test it's true :) but it will mean you cursor is capable of moving faster than your eye can follow, even at 250fps (which 800dpi can do anyway)

I have a Mamba for my main computer , and the abyssus on my laptop. It's a very good, small mouse. It is indeed ambidextrous, but unlike some other mice i do believe the DPI is set by a meter underneath it, and not changeable on the fly (a feature which is nice if your in a tank/jet or somethingm, makes looking around you quicker). At one point, I used to prefer this mouse to my CM storm Sentinel at the time. Got some pretty damn decent marks on battlefield bad company 2 on my laptop. Gaming mice definitely do improve your speed and reaction time in my opinion.
Note: i was running on my laptop at 1600x900 resolution.
Now though, my mamba is like ......i can't describe it.

Here is a left hand version of the Razer DeathAdder. More expensive than your link, but I am happy with the right hand version and would recommend it. Had 3 Razer mice in a row, and whilst the DeathAdder only has 2 buttons, it does make life simpler than the nine million button mice I have used in the past, as I always ended up clicking a random button by mistake because of the claw like death grip I use. Really embarrassing to chuck down an amo / medic pack by mistake, when in the middle of a 1 v 1 gun fight.

I took me ages to get used to the sensitivity of a gaming mouse, and I moaned and complained during the change, but once I got my head around how sensitive they are, I was really happy that I had changed. The one thing that I have noticed though is that the mouse surface does become very important, and it took me ages to find something that I really liked.

I tend to buy most of my PC stuff from "overclockers" these days, as they are good for price, one off sales and reliability. Even if you don't buy from them, it's worth looking at the user reviews, as a lot of gamers buy from them.

PS: Yes, they definitely do improve your speed and accuracy.
