I downloaded the firmware for it...then it says 'Unable to open drive' when i try to install???

Also, in my computer, it's listed as a DVD RW drive (but when you highlight it and look it the botom it just says Cd drive....shouldnt it say dvd drive there too?)

Sounds like the wrong firmware to me, hence it couldnt find the drive the firmware is for.

open drives a new one to me. it usualy says ,are you sure you want to run this program if so dont fck with anything during the process or youll own a new (name part) paper weight

so yours is definitly a TSST DRIVE because the firmware fix is for media read troubles
taken from dell site on the drop down box dialog page for firmware update also it tells you hoe to flash the firmware
Fixes and Enhancements
Fixes auto-run issue when media is inserted ,IE drive thinks its eating rich tea bisquits instead of running cod [Gay Ops]

alienware in my eyes isnt the buzz it used to be mainly because parts actually now run oc,ed were as before we had to trade serial numbers for the ones that did oc well as opposed to [sh*t] we found out was laser cut to cripple em blah blah blah the good old days riding trams etc etc

Also, in my computer, it's listed as a DVD RW drive (but when you highlight it and look it the botom it just says Cd drive....shouldnt it say dvd drive there too?

they do, see attached crap
