Sorry mate, but creating links that open new tabs/windows automatically is both a useability and accessibility "no no" as it is not an expected behaviour of clicking a link.

I think most people here think it's annoying that you have to click back from an external link to this forum, most other forums/websites open linkies on a new tab cause thats what users expect.
Maybe start a poll?

I dont think we need a poll LJ, the expected default behaviour of a browser upon clicking a link on a web page is that the new content is loaded in the same tab/window. If a user wishes to open that content in a new tab/window then they have the means to do so by using the relevant browser function (ie: right clicking the link and selecting "open in new tab/window"):

Despite the age of the linked articles they are still valid to this day mate, click a basic link in any web browser (<a href="#">link</a>) and you will see its default behaviour (load linked content into current window).

Modern browsers give users the option to customise their internet experience, you can for example configure the browser to open all links in a new windows/tabs, you can create a custom cascading stylesheet that overrides the ones provided by websites (useful for those of you who like all websites to use pink text on a black background!), you can make text bigger or smaller, you can accept/deny all or some cookies, you can prevent images from loading.....etc...etc.

The point is that a web designer should not try to interfere with the default behaviour of a browser or assistive device where possible. If a user wants to customise their experience (such as opening links in a new window) then they can (and should) do it via the options provided by their browser.
